They needed to rest just to make the Super Bowl. Yeah, this sucks. But, how much more would it suck to play Baltimore with no pass rush and our back up DBs?

You think the nonsense is flying after this game (and it is), how much worse would it be if we took a nose dive against a sneaky good Baltimore team because we had our B team players?

If anything, I think that we need more resting. Freeney and Mathis absolutely should not play if the game is in hand (as it was against the Jets when Freeney got hurt). An injury can happen on any play (Kravitz got that right), so minimize the plays that our high risk players are on the field. By the way, Freeney and Mathis will be 30 and 29 next year. Rest will be even more important. - Chris S.

I don't think they would have made the Super Bowl had they not rested players. - DZ

I don't want to use the phrase "complete failure", but this season feels like a waste of time. A long c0ck-tease. They get to 14-0 and have a memorable TD to Wayne on a Thursday night game to cap it off. You think 16-0 at the very least is there for the taking. And then comes the pulling of the starters in the Jets game, and the first loss. Now perfection is gone and it's ugly Painter ball to finish the reg. season. Then they have that impressive comeback on the #1 defense of the Jets, and you think scoring a lot on the Saints will be a given. This is the big one to win, a legacy-builder for these guys. And they don't capitalize even after having a 10-0 lead and dominant 1st quarter. It's very disappointing and a tough one to swallow.

No perfection, no title, no nothing.

Freeney getting hurt in the end of the AFC-C just again proves injuries can happen at any time. Resting won't make you invulnerable. So why not keep playing for history? I honestly would rather join the 07 Patriots at 18-1 and lose the SB than be where the 09 Colts are. - Scott K

Still think Kravitz is a yutz most of the time but this column was dead on with the exception of going for perfect. If Colts win the Jets game the NFL was likely to flex the Colts/Bills game so that game would have been played in a nightime blizzard. Who would really want to risk Manning and other key starters in that? - Westside Rob

Brees is a pretty good quarterback

All of which reminds me...wasn't Brees a dropped pass away from Marino's single season yardage record also? Of the single season records for QBs, I'd guess the big three are TDs (obviously), yardage, and completion percentage. Drew was real close to holding 2/3.

There's been a lot of talk about Manning and Brady (and in one of those cases, it is deserved), but Brees has put together quite a career.

And Thank Heaven for an idiotic Chargers GM, or Drew would have a couple of Super Bowls there. Maybe even XLI (did anyone else just shudder like someone walked on your grave?). I will now go put on my Super Bowl XLI shirt, maybe watch the 2006 AFC championship game on Hulu, and sulk. And yes, I'm snowed in here. - Chris S.

He got that right and the Manning thing. Good point on perfection. If anything that game showed why rest was the right choice. - DZ

Just a quibble with Kravitz

Kravitz did nail the "playing not to lose" thing. I said that to be brother in our postgame postmortem. However, dragging back the "perfection" thing was silly.

The Saints woofed about perfection before it meant anything. They never had to make any choices, as they lost for the first time while they still needed wins to wrap up the 1 seed. And, after they wrapped it up, you'll notice there was a lot of sitting (though Brees may have sat also to protect his completion percentage record).
