Isn't Cincy 2-2 versus common Colts opponents? Beat Baltimore twice and then lost to Denver (Stokely- Week 1) and lost to Houston. - cleanface

from the colts.com Polian Corner

"Q: Officials aren't always perfect, but the call at the end of the game – you have to be really alert to make that call correctly . . .

A: You do. I have to go back and look on the tape to see who it was. I saw the juggle from my vantage-point – the hands moving up and down, which indicates a juggle – and I thought he had dropped the ball. Then, I saw them spot the ball. [Vice President of Football Operations] Chris [Polian] said to me, 'No, no, no. He bobbled it.' Once the bobble takes place, you don't get forward progress at that point. You have to secure the ball. [Safety] Melvin Bullitt was ‘Johnny on the Spot.’ He came driving in there a hundred miles an hour. He put [Patriots] running back [Kevin] Faulk right on his back..." - filiusdextris

but I can tell you what I saw on the play. Faulk did bobble the ball, but it was not as exaggerated as Collinsworth made it to be. However, as he was trying to cradle the ball for possession, his momentum carried him behind the 30 yard line. From my understanding of the rules, the spot of the ball is determined by where the ball is, not the feet. Its like the goal line. The ball must break the plain in order to score a TD. in this case, the ball must break the first down plain in order to be a first down. Combine all the events: the bobble and the contact initiated by Bullit as Faulk's momentum was carrying him out of the 30 yard line and its short of the first.

On a side note, I think forward progress is established if you are contacted before making a "football move". So lets say you caught the ball at the 30 and were tackled backward, then thats forward progress. If you make a football move and then get tackled, the forward progress will take place where you got tackled after making said move. - Robert I
