Anyone arguing against the Colts signing Robert Mathis need to read Ben Savage's breakdown of the game tape from the Texans game. Throughout his career Robert Mathis has been a clutch player whose versatility is widely overlooked. Once again he came up big against the Texans by forcing a fumble and then recovering:
Mathis starts off with an inside move, which he uses to gauge the offensive protections. He then takes an outside step, and it becomes a conventional Mathis speed rush off the edge.
His lateral speed and agility is too much for Eric Winston (#73, RT), who has been one of the best at the position in the league this year.
Robert sticks out a great big paw and bats the ball out of Yates’ hand. Looking at the protection, Yates could certainly have stepped up into the pocket to help his tackle out. He doesn’t do so, and is punished ruthlessly. The issue is similar to what we’ve experienced all year with Curtis Painter and Dan Orlovsky.
Mathis recovers his own forced fumble, and the Colts have a crucial turnover into Houston territory.
