Blue Crush

Don't you just love it when things go according to script?  Let's be honest, what happened tonight in Indianapolis (and in New Orleans for that matter) was what was SUPPOSED to happen.  Tonight, the Colts stomped Baltimore and moved on to the AFC Championship game where they'll play San Diego, oops, I mean the winner of the Chargers Jets game next Sunday.  It's late, so let's get down to business:

Reasons to Smile:

  • THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS MOMENTUM OR RUST.  If there were, the Colts and Saints who finished a collective 0-5 to finish the regular season would not have just won their two games by a combined score of 65-17.  Please, next year can we just talk about matchups and ignore the pointless speculation.  I saw lots of Super Bowl predictions this week.  Almost no one had the Saints and Colts meeting in Miami.  I have a feeling they are going to.
  • I have never seen a game plan that showed more disrespect to an opposing offense than the Colts offensive game plan.  It was super conservative all night because the Colts clearly didn't think Joe Flacco was capable of generating 14 points of offense against them.  Peyton was super careful with the ball other than the one bad pass that Reed picked off (yes, I realize there were two, but the second wouldn't have been a pick without the obvious interference call that nullified it).  In the fourth quarter, the Colts basically just sat on a 17 point lead, knowing full well the Ravens had no chance to come back. Frankly, I thought it was smart.  Boring as crap, but smart.  A lot of people have already started to complain about it, but it reminded me of the Super Bowl when Dungy just went into the shell because he knew Grossman wasn't bringing the Bears back.  Sometimes, you just do what you have to do to roll the clock and bring it home.  I don't think it means anything more than the Colts clearly had zero respect for Flacco tonight.
  • Pierre Garcon.  You will almost never hear me say a bad word about Marvin Harrison, but against KC in '06 Law jumped him and took a ball away.  Marv sat and bitched at the ref for flag while Law streaked down the sideline.  After Manning's one truly bad decision of the night, Frenchy hauled ass down the sideline and turned a game changing play back in the Colts favor by punching the ball loose from Ed Reed.  Just a fine, fine moment for the kid.  That's a play that will live in Colts' lore.
  • 14 plays, 75 yards, 8:00 TD drive, immediately followed by an 8 play, 64 yard TD drive in 1:23.  When you have the kind offense that can do both of those things, you are doing all right.  Manning stone cold took the game over at a critical juncture and essentially made the second half a foregone conclusion.
  • Reggie Wayne's vice grip hands.
  • Austin Collie not being afraid of the moment.
  • Everything about Mike Hart.
  • Not having a good enough kicker to hit a 50 yard FG, so we have to go for fourth downs.
  • Raheem Brock sealing his entrance into the Classic Colts with a great hustle play (and a key knock down)
  • Gary Brackett in coverage when it counts.
  • Finally getting all the breaks and bounces.  That makes up for last year's game.
  • Pat McAfee hit some huge punts at all the right times.
  • Listening to Demond scream at Ravens fans "YOU WASTED YOUR TIME AND YOUR MONEY!  THE COLTS NEVER LOSE TO THE RAVENS!  NEVER!  HOW DID YOU NOT KNOW THAT?" as he exited the stadium.  It made me feel warm inside.

Reasons to Frown:

  • The first pick by Reed was either a bad route by Garcon, or just an awful throw by Manning. Either way, it was ugly.
  • Kelvin Hayden's play on the first drive.  He looked to be feeling Mason out.  Although to be fair, he had three catches on the first drive and one the rest of the game, so maybe I shouldn't nitpick.
  • Not a ton of pass rush tonight.  It was adequate, and Flacco certainly seemed unnerved by it, but the only sack came on a blitz by Brackett.
  • 42 yards on 25 carries to go with just 5.1 YPA?  Talk about playing it close to the vest.  I suppose it pays to remember just what defense you are playing.  The Ravens had the #3 DVOA defense, and the #3 NFL defense.  The Chargers are 16th, by the way.
  • The big drop by Garcon nullified what would have been a SWEET first down.
  • Bethea's dropped pick.  Dude.  Come on.

Best Call:

The timeout after the first down play by the Ravens under two minutes.  Honestly, I thought it was over agressive at the time, but the Colts executed it to perfection scoring a TD with just :02 to play in the half.  Beautiful coaching.

Worst Call:

In the second quarter, I hated the third down deep ball to Garcon from the 46 on third and 7.  I thought they should have played two down football there.  Whatever.  It's hard to complain about the coaching tonight.

Reasons I'm Flying:

  • We are one game from Miami.
  • I think everyone will be back on the bandwagon.  Is there any question the Colts D was ready to play and healthy?  The blizzard was never going allow 16-0 anyway, so in the end, no harm no foul. It should be bedlam at the Luke next week.
  • Lots of hustle.  Brock, Garcon are just the most obvious ones.  This team has a fire in their eyes.
  • All the pressure is off. It's go time now.
  • Uh, did I mention that we are one game from Miami?

Reasons I'm Dying

  • Bethea took a hard hit at the end of the game.  We need him or we are in trouble.
  • Don Brown really looks lost out there sometimes.  Oh, and we still have no running game at all.
  • I hate games with the Chargers.  They are always close.  They always come down to the wire.  Oh, and we really don't have a kicker who can make a 50 yard kick.

The Bottom Line:

Winning feels good.  The Colts were the better team.  They played a safe, controlled game tonight against a team that had no business being on the field with them offensively.  The Ravens were half a team, and half a team isn't good enough to beat the Colts.  Had we lost tonight, I honestly might have shut down the blog for good.  It would have been that devastating.  Instead, we got a satisfying, dominant win over a team that smoked the once mighty Patriots at home last week. By the way, every analyst or commentator who picked this game based on anything other than on the field things should be embarrased (yeah, I'm looking at you Jeremy Green).

There's still a long road ahead, but it leads through Indianapolis.

I wouldn't want it any other way.

Great recap

This was likely already posted but I just got home:

I loved Peyton yelling "Goddamn it, Donald!" DURING the play when Brown whiffed on his assignment and almost got Peyton blindsided. Didn't like the play but the reax was awesome.

Hard to complain after that win, assuming no one is hurt badly.

Whitlock's whining and complaining on his twitter account is pure gold.

I hate the NFL. Nothing I want to happen ever happens. The league has sucked ever since Jeff George retired!!

one of my favorite plays tonight ...

besides the hustle plays mentioned above was Brackett fighting off his block and stepping up to absolutely STONE rice

I caught that "Goddammit Donald" as well and had a pretty good laugh at it. Probably Peyton's funniest work since SNL. However, I am freaking worried about Donald Brown. It is getting so that I don't want to see him in the backfield in crucial situations (read: redzone). Mike Hart is starting to make me think we could have done better with our #1 pick this year. But, Brown is still a rookie and hopefully he will get with the program. I expect to see him playing markedly better next season.

Peyton yelled 'God damn it. Help!' On that one play.

In other news: the two remaining possible contestants have lost their dominant 3-4 NT's, as opposed to Ngata (who's a damned beast). I feel much more confident in a balanced Colts O against either.

Every Colts fan screamed, 'What the hell is Jennings doing in this game?' at the same time as we watched that play.

This team seems hell bent to do something. This effort was fantastic at all levels. Pierre knocking that ball out is going to become an instant classic Colts history moment. Just pure effort there.

The Run-O is scary. But, it's effective at times. I'm about ready to just say put Hart in the game at all times, if not for Joe's occasional astounding protection/reception game.

Honestly I am excited about Hart and Brown. Yeah it was ugly tonight but those guys are strong runners and both made nice moves after receptions. The blitz pickup is an issue, though.

Addai getting banged up probably altered the gameplan a bit too. Much harder to throw downfield without him picking up blitzers.

The first half was sweet, but the second half left a lot to be desired on offense. Good thing the Ravens are such a stupid team that make critical mistakes or else this thing would have been much closer. Doesn't hurt that Flacco is the new Dilfer in the playoffs.

Keep the Chargers/Jets under 20 points and this team is going to the SB.

written by DemondSanders, January 17, 2010
When you are up 14 points it doesn't pay to get aggressive. The Colts did their job in the second with that 14 play, 7 minute+ field goal drive. The game was over at that point. I'd have been pissed if they had taken any risks. Little Dungy ball never hurt anyone.

This is a defensive team now... and I love it.

Was watching the clock at the beginning of the first half. The Ravens never looked terribly threatening, so, every run that netted 2 or 3 yards was a good run. Run that clock and force them to throw the ball, and play to our strengths.

That is the epitome of Colts football.

Jeremy Green is the worst football commentator I've ever heard. He sounds like such a meathead. "THE COLTS BETTER BUCKLE UP THEIR CHIN STRAPS" I OFFER NO ANALYSIS JUST RETARDED FOOTBALL CLICHES LISTEN TO ME MAKE LOUD NOISES AND POORLY SUPPORTED PREDICTIONS.

I don't know how that guy gets an ESPN podcast, I'd rather have Deion, Irvin and Shannon Sharpe do a podcast together.

When I heard one of the pundits after the game talk about how the Colts lack an explosive offense. That is why I come to this site.

I don't remember watching Hart play much in the regular season, but he was doing great tonight. More than once, he picked up the blitz, and he looked incredibly tough overall.

New Orleans isn't going to drop a game against either of their possible opponents. It's going to be Colts-Saints in Miami. After that, I have no idea who wins.

That first pick by manning had a lot to do w/ Garcon. You have to come back on that ball. Defense played great, but corners are going to have to step it up next week. Loved the fact I can't remember seeing Jennings. Offense did what the had to do, but I would love to see some more passes in the flat to Addai on some chip and gos.

My biggest wish for next year. Pleeeeese draft me a kickoff/punt returner.

Please draft me a damned road-grader that protects better than Ugoh.

As I saw it, the first pick had to do with Collie not running an inside deep slant, thereby taking Reed's attention away from the outside deep dig by Garcon. I think that was on Collie, not Garcon.
I believe Bethea was there on the last drive
written by dmstorm22, January 17, 2010
either way, he looked OK on the sidelines. We really need him, but I think we will be ok (as in he will be ok).
Great game!

I love me some Mike Hart!

Also, I think a twenty point performance against this Ravens defense is pretty good. Especially the way we relaxed in the fourth offensively.

I love me some Raheem Brock!

The demons have been exorcised! Time to win the AFC next Sunday.

I love me some Pierre Garcon!

How is Caldwell not coach of the year? I loved his two gutsy calls late in the fist half.

I love me some Gsry Brackett!

Tomorrow I'm just gonna enjoy some good football. I don't really care who wins, as long as we win the game against thm next week.

Oh, and I love me some Colts football!

We beat them 15 - 6 on route to the Super Bowl.

I don't give crap if its explosive or not... Just keep knocking them down.
too much to comment on, so a few notes
written by Bob M, January 17, 2010
The Mathis offsides flag was the right call. I called it live before the flag came out.

On the first pick, Manning said afterwards in the presser that there was a mistake on another route up the middle that was supposed to draw Reed that way. Maybe watching a recording will help figure out what, but usually he mans up when he throws a stinkbomb. Maybe the guy ran his route and Ed just ignored him....

Count me ammong those who did not like our "all 3-and-out all the time" game plan at the end. I can only assume Manning bought into it (essentially don't throw and risk giving them a short field--if they get the ball back, make it 60+ yards and not 25), but it bugged me. Maybe it was not disrespect for Balt's O, but trust in our D. Works both ways. And our D proved it was justified.

Looking a LOT like 2006, except Manning is playing better than he did then.

I THINK we are all healthy and KNOW we willhave one more day of rest than our opponents, plus no travel!

Bob, I called the Mathis offsides too live, but then on the replay it looks like he just timed it perfectly. I think he was just too freaking quick.

written by MattW, January 17, 2010
The biggest difference I see between this year and 2006 is the run game is now worse and the defense is a lot better at stopping the run. We no longer rely on Sanders (or any safety) stopping all the runs.

Great call by DZ on how the old kicker will force some good 4th down calls. You've said it several times and yesterday is turned out great.

I loved seeing Mike Hart out there. Brown should do a whole lot better next year after having an offseason to learn the playbook better. And if it all goes according to plan, we'll have 3 distinct RB's next season that can all do a bit of everything.

I loved Brackett last night. Didn't notice Session as much as I thought I would but GB (I thought) just dominated.

everyone around me at the game was calling him frenchy. i'm sure he cares a lot.

written by DZ, January 17, 2010
Here's the thing:

When the Colts drafted him, I heard the name Pierre, and dubbed him Frenchy. For all I knew, he was a white dude from Quebec. If his name was Vladamir, I would probably call him "the Ruski".

If you are Haitian and it offends you, I'll stop. If, however, you are worried about how some imaginary Haitian may or may not feel, I would suggest you spend your time helping Haitians in other ways.

written by J-DC, January 17, 2010
Offensive? His name is french, first and last. On the Mathis offsides, they actually called it on freeney, though it was clearly Mathis live who looked to be offside. I agree that the replay made it look like he was just insanely fast.

The "God damn it, Donald" was so great that I rewound the dvr to watch it again a few times. I dont know how the commentators didnt make a mention about it , it was so loud
There were a lot Colts players who hustled all game...
written by 35er, January 17, 2010
but I think Brackett was the player of the game (on defense, at least). He fought off blockers, covered well, tackled well, and was just playing smart football. What a game he had.

I do agree that we were pretty damn conservative on offense and if we do end up playing the Chargers next week I think we're going to need to open it up more. I loved seeing Hart in there. Hopefully we see more of him next week no matter the opponent.

I'm definitely not taking anything away from our defense but did anyone else notice that Flacco looked shook out there? I noticed the look on his face as early as the first quarter, I think before kickoff too, and he just looked nervous as hell.
I don't think DZ is in Argentina at all...
written by Doug England, January 17, 2010
Instead I think that is just an elaborate cover story. You know how the Patriots have that guy on staff that no one really knows what he does, but he just deals directly with Belichek? (He supposedly has a photographic memory, and it was his abilities that allowed them to "cheat" so successfully.)

Anyway, I think DZ is holed up somewhere in the Colts offices, and during the games he is the only one on Coach Caldwell's headphones.

...3rd and two at the thirty-five, two down territory

...O.K. now it's fourth and four, go for it anyway

...seven seconds is an eternity. Go for the dagger

Sorry to blow your cover.

Excellent write up, but I think I can fill in some of the blanks on some concerns you have. The first pick by Reed, Garcon ran a deep route and Manning threw a comeback route (meaning Garcon should have gone 12-15 yards, planted, and came back, for those unfamiliar with route lingo). I feel like the tremendous effort may have been driven a little by the thought of, "Oh I just F***ed up and have to make up for this."

I feel the run game will be okay, but you're right, last night it did not show up. However, remember this Ravens D is an excellent run defense, and we don't exactly have AP and CJ back there taking handoffs. Yet, many run plays were called simply as "keep the clock running" plays. As in, the plan was to keep the clock running rather than run for 10-15. Run blocking was sub-par, but once again, credit the Ravens more than discredit the line. Brown had an excellent run, but you're right, he looks lost sometimes. Still, he didn't disappoint me, he just needs to keep working. Hart played his heart out and I love him for that, even if his performance didn't translate to the stat sheet. I love this kid and have no problem with him getting the amount of PT he did.

Not a whole lot of neg's to take from this game. The D looked like the best in the league after a shake first quarter. Manning and the skill guys were sharp, esp. Collie. God love him. Pass blocking was very good. I think Bethea just got the wind knocked out of him, but hopefully he's fine.
Peyton trying to run down Ed Reed was hilarious. I just have to say that.

All in all, we stuck it to a lot of doubters out there last night. Mucho props.

I've donated what I can to help the Haitian recovery effort, though the comment has little to do with that. Given the history of Haiti, it's roughly equivalent to calling a White American person a "Brit" or a southern African American "Confederate". Any colonizer/colonized or oppressed/oppressor relationship works there. Honestly when I saw his name I immediately thought French as well, but we know better now.

I love the blog and the analysis, you guys do a great job. Go Colts.
...
written by DZ, January 17, 2010
None of that changes the fact that his name is French. It's like the amish calling Harrison Ford "English" in Witness.

I've traveled a lot, and I've generally found that white Americans get way more offended about such things than anyone else in the world does.

If a Haitian tells me it's offensive, I can buy that. Calling him Frenchy because he's a Haitian, I could buy that as well.

I call him Frenchy because his name is Pierre. Pierre is a French name. It's a term of affection.

Does anyone know where in the game Manning cussing out DB occurs?

I keep hearing about it and haven't seen it myself even though I re-watched most of the game...

@Demond
written by npb1985, January 17, 2010
Regarding Peyton cussing out DB, I'm not sure what play it is people are talking about but I remember a play where Brown missed a block and Peyton had to scramble quickly to his right and get rid of the ball. As he was scrambling, the mic's on the field picked up (or at least this is what it sounded like to me) Manning yelling, "G***amnit Donald!" as he ran.

Maybe their talking about another instance, though, like maybe in the first quarter when Brown tripped on his route. I'm not 100% sure where the tough love for the rookie actually occurred.
