Tackle the Problem
Written by Deshawn Zombie

First the good from the game tonight:

  • It speaks volumes about Caldwell's control of the team that they came out sharp.  The team clearly wanted to perform well, and by and large did.  Getting the rare win was meaningless, more important was how sharp the team looked and how hard they played.  Caldwell wanted them to prove something and they did.
  • We can officially bury all the "Joseph Addai sucks" talk.  He was explosive, shifty, and made an incredible catch on third down.  This man is a seriously talented football player.
  • The right side of the line opened running lanes.  That almost never happened last year.
  • Painter has quite the gun on him.  I doubt he unseats Sorgi this year, but Jim had better watch out.  If Painter hangs around with the practice squad, I bet he takes the back up job next year.
  • The two TE set up is going to work well.  Tamme is still in development, but he's going to become a weapon.
  • TJ Rushing had a nice return.  I still think that if healthy, he's the Colts' best option.
  • Mike Hart played.  Good for him.
  • Dwight Freeney, Peyton Manning, Reggie Wayne.  Those guys are who they are.  As long as they are upright, this team is going to win games.
  • 1.4 YPC for the Eagles.  Zero first downs rushing...oh yeah, missing 4 starters on O-line and no Westbrook..

Now the big, big, BIG negative:

The Colts don't have a left tackle.

Charlie Johnson was an abject disaster.  He gave up a big hit on Peyton on the first TD drive. Manning avoided a sack with his lightening release on a sweet pass to Addai.  Then CJ followed it up on the next Colts possession by getting whipped again, leading to a sack fumble.  In fairness, Pollack got beat on the play as well (not that this makes me feel any better).

Unfortunately, Ugoh didn't play well either.  He picked up a couple of penalties (although the second was not a good call), blew some run blocks, and looked generally lost.  Johnson left the door wide open (as we knew he would), but Ugoh didn't walk through it.  Instead, he laid down on the welcome mat and took a little nap.

I could list a few other negatives, but this overshadows everything else.  Don't be fooled by Peyton's gaudy numbers.  The Philly D was playing vanilla and had a blown coverage.  The real story is that Indy is going to start the season without a credible answer at left tackle.

We've never been 100% sold on Ugoh and have only supported him as an alternative to Johnson who is too slow to play tackle. What concerns me is that with the job on his plate to take, Ugoh went out and played sub-standard football, making what appeared to be mental errors.  That's the knock on him all along.  All the tools but can't put it all together.

As I see it, the Colts' options are limited:

  • LOTS of TE help (paging Mr. Robinson) and RB help for Johnson
  • Go with Ugoh and take the good with the bad (my vote)
  • Try to sign a veteran off the scrap heap.  The problem is that no one out there will be any better than Johnson/Ugoh.  NFL caliber LTs don't grown on trees.

We agonized over the return of Howard Mudd, and now he has to earn his money.  He has two more weeks to get through to Ugoh (who at least has the tools to play the position).  Johnson may be a hard worker, but he simply isn't quick enough.  Desire and effort are great, but he doesn't have the requisite skill set to play tackle.  He's a valuable player to have on the team.  He's a capable backup guard.  He played great in the Super Bowl (in a soggy, wet field by the way...hard to have a guy run by you in the mud), but that doesn't make him an NFL starter.

Mr. Mudd, you have two weeks.  The clock is ticking.

We need a left tackle.

Ugoh Looked Awful Last Night
written by Chip Bennett, August 21, 2009
I actually got to watch the game on TV last night.

Ugoh looked awful. He was getting beaten playing with/against the second-string (and third-string) lines.

On an unrelated note, I liked what I saw from our defense last night:

What's this corner-blitz thing I saw last night? Jerraud Powers getting a tackle for loss? Who knew Colts CBs could do that?!?

For a second week in a row, I have to admit that Tim Jennings looks much-improved.

That series in which our defense got off the field from 2nd-and-3, 3rd-and-1, and 4th-and-inches was really nice to see.

And on ST: were we really playing that well, or were PHI just playing that badly?

Ugoh was bad. It troubles me because so was CJ.

The D played well, but remember that it was against a second string team. The Eagles didn't dress 4 starting linemen or Westbrook. Makes it hard to pick up 3rd and shorts.

Philly was pretty much a mess on ST. The Colts came out with a sense of purpose and it showed.
couldn't agree more

I have been dismayed by Charlie Johnson at LT, and thought the coaches must be blind to pick him over Ugoh. This game showed me what their issues have been.

Ugoh was a disaster! He was getting beat up by 4th and 5th string guys. He was in the wrong position on both running and passing plays. All in all a dreadful performance.

On the other hand CJ got beat, badly, at least 3 times.

Without a serviceable LT you are not going to win a SuperBowl in the NFL. It won't happen. They need to figure something out fast.

Also, I was disappointed by our DLine. When your 1s go against their 2s, they should dominate. Our guys looked good, but not like men among boys, which is what I want to see in that situation.

I felt the same way about the D-line, because it didn't look dominant. Then I looked at the numbers and realized that they allowed almost no rushing yards and forced a sack/fumble of McNabb.

It's hard to ask much more than that.

No doubt LT is issue #1. Another observation - 2 weeks, 2 drops for Mr. Garcon. Check please?

This post is why I actually *read* 18-to-88 and only skim Stampede Blue anymore. No hyperventilating or overreacting. No saying that Caldwell's competence should be in question if CJ is the starter. An actual REASONED post ont he LT problems rather than shouting that the sky is falling. Thanks for the good post. I too amd pretty troubled by the LT position. Not sure there IS a good answer, which troubles me even more. :

Did love what I saw of the new blitzes in the defensive package though. That was pretty nice to see!

I just looked over BBS's take on the issue. I don't think he's wrong, but I also don't think there is a clear reason to blame anyone (except the two players perhaps).

The LT situation is kind of fubar at this point given the timing of it. I guess we are in wait and see mode now. Which is a scary place to be a less than a month before the season starts.

Garcon just needs to settle down. Once that happens, he'll be ok. He did do some good things last night.

You can't blame either penalty on Ugoh. Like DZ said, the second call was a bad call. The first call could have been called on any of the lineman- they all false started. Must have been the center's fault for not snapping it.

I can't comprehend how Ugoh could suck so bad against 2nd and 3rd stringers. He used to be a starter! I am beginning to think the demotion may be permanent based on production, not just a "kick in the pants" like we all suspected. How would he have played against their first string? Better than CJ? Maybe. Maybe not. I think it is time to become alarmed.

Tough to say if the defense will be blitzing in the regular season. They always seem to tease us in the preseason and then go back to just coverage.

I'm not concerned with the d-line. Not yet.
Neither was I impressed with special teams. One kick return was enough to satisfy you? Not me. I think they have much to improve on. No fumbles or penalties was nice to see, but that's what should be expected.

I was impressed with the play of Powers. He seems to have the presence of an NFL player, and certainly he has skills. Same with Clint Session. He is just plain instinctive. I think we've seen it from him since he got here, but this year may be a whole new level for him. Get your 55 jerseys early.

Clint Session is ready to take "The Leap". I agree, Guy. If he doesn't play to a near Pro Bowl level, I'll be surprised.

@Guy At least through the first half Ugoh was playing against the same guys CJ did. The Eagles didn't pull starters until about halftime. After the half Ugoh was facing scrubs.

That makes me feel a little better about Ugoh. Hopefully they put him as starter by the opener. I can't imagine why they wouldn't.

Charlie Johnson made two big mistakes, both because of his limited lateral quickness. Which we've seen before.

Other than that though, he was okay. The Colts will just have to account for that with some help to his side, which having a healthy Ryan Diem at RT will allow.

Tony Ugoh was a total mess last night, I thought. And that really stung for me personally because I've been a complete Ugoh believer since day one. I've always thought of him as the future of the Colts.

Yesterday though, yesterday was the very first time I thought of him and looked at him as not being the future of the Colts. He was miserable.
That's a good summary
written by DZ, August 21, 2009
I agree, last night was the first time I began to seriously doubt Ugoh either.

I'm still convinced CJ will be a disaster.
I'm still convinced Ugoh is better.

I'm just not convinced he'll be any good.

When I watched the game Thursday night, I summed up my thoughts on the LT situation to some friends. Then 18to88 says it exactly as I felt, only expressed better. Thanks, guys!

After Johnson's outing, Ugoh had his golden opportunity. And he blew it. I am very concerned about LT now. We will see.
